What is Dumog?

Dumog is a popular fighting style from the Philippines. This art form was formed as a necessity for the Philippines people to protect their country from the invaders and from the local conflicts. It is a close quarter combat system and also it is a wrestling art which is named as Filipino.

It is different from the normal wrestling because it is a style where the practitioner wrestles while he or she is standing upright.  It is also a grappling style which consists of pushes, pulls, weight shifts and joint locks. Also, there are throws, takedowns and submissions too.

This martial art is designed to move the opponent.  Taking the advantage of the opponent’s weight and directions of force throw off the balance is potently used in this martial art form. Dumog is based on control points on the human body. This martial art creates opportunities to use close quarter attacks such as head butts, knees, forearms and elbow strikes.

Dumog techniques are very friendly with the environment of around the practitioner. They can use the surrounding environment to attack the opponent and hurt the opponent by using things around. Dumog is not an Olympic sport and in this art form there can be seen many nerve point attacks such as pinching, biting, ripping/tearing methods.

There are different variations of this martial art which differ from region to region in which it is practiced in Philippines. Most of the Dumog competitions are conducted only in Philippines as regional level competitions.  Dumog is influenced from Kali, Arnis, Eskrima martial arts. Dumog martial art style is known as a brutal martial art type. In the real-life situations, a Dumog fighter is able to destroy all the vital areas on arm, the face, the throat, the collar bones, shoulders and etc. of the opponent. Dumog is known as perfect self-defense art when it comes to the day-to-day scenarios.

What is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art and a combat sport based on ground fighting and submission holds. This martial art was created and developed in Brazil. In BJJ it mainly focuses to take the opponent to the ground and control the opponent. BJJ is mainly influenced by the Judo and Japanese Jiu Jitsu. And later on, it was developed as a separate art form as BJJ after 1920s. BJJ is a full contact art form with techniques that aim on ground fighting, submissions and grappling. BJJ is now considered as an Olympic sport and it is an essential martial art form in MMA.

The physical level of the practitioner is not considered in BJJ because this martial art was developed based on a concept that a smaller or a weaker person can defend him or herself against a bigger and stronger opponent, by taking as a leverage and weight distribution to take the opponent on to the ground by using holds and submissions to defeat the opponent.

This martial art can use in both sports and real-life situations as a self-defense technique.  In BJJ practices it helps the practitioners to gain physical endurance, build the own character of her or his self and use it as a way of life. BJJ is guided under the IBJJF which is named as International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation.

Similarities and differences of Dumog and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

As similarities Dumog and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu both are grappling martial art forms. There are similar techniques and methods such as submissions, joint locks and etc.

As differences Dumog is not a standardized martial art as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Dumog is not considered as a sport, and it does an actual harm to the opponent in the shortest possible way unlike in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu such as dislocating joints and breaking bones. The rules and regulations of Dumog is very less when it is compared to the BJJ. As a self-defense art Dumog is very effective and also it is deadlier. Because, in Dumong many martial art styles are blended with in the in the art and this helps to survive hand to hand combat situations or weapon-based situations.

The Dumog practitioners are more confidence of their martial art and they have gained the flexibility, self-awareness, and physical fitness from the training of Dumog. In Dumog, practitioners always take the leverage of the body muscles and joints of the opponent to turn the fight against the opponent. It is a very brutal art form which comes from Philippines, and it is also known as Philippine wrestling.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art form that can be used as a sport and also it can be used as a self-defense martial art. In BJJ they always try to protect the opponent in competitions and their competition rules are also built to make sure the safety of the players unlike in Dumog. There is a proper grading system in BJJ but there is no proper grading system in Dumog. BJJ practitioners has their own unique Gi (Uniform) but there is no proper Gi can be seen in the Dumog.

Dumog was never built for sport fighting but with the time it has been converted into the sport fighting in the Philippine regions. Dumog was formed to built warriors and to keep practitioners ready for any situation. Because of this brutality this art form is not much popular among the world. But many martial artists love to learn this martial art in order to improve their knowledge in martial arts.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that is very popular among the world and there is a proper grading system and a proper way of teaching a practitioner from basic to the advance. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is very effective in street fights against a one opponent. BJJ is an art form that can compete only one on one. However, BJJ is good to win a street fight and by that minimizing any kind of damage to the BJJ practitioners’ self can be done.  To practice BJJ there is no age limit or a physical condition to be achieved because BJJ can be learnt by anyone who wants to learn.  As a grappling and ground fighting art BJJ practitioners have more advantages in real life situations. A BJJ practitioner can control any opponent without damaging or harming the opponent unless he or she wish for it.

The purpose of learning a martial art is to defend yourself, protect others from such situations and to control the mind and body. All these purposes are covered by the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu rather than the Dumog martial art. That’s the reason Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is very famous all-round the world.
